Manchester United- A Sinking Ship?

Earlier in the week Wayne Rooney looked to be leaving Old Trafford before eventually getting the assurances he wanted to hear about the clubs future. Rooney's possible exit began to raise doubts about Manchester Untied and now even after signing a new 5year contract those doubts remain.

The debt that the Glazier's got the club into continues to grow while a potential lack of silverware this season coupled with the possibility of United dropping out of European football raise more alarm. A top four finish this season is ofcourse well within their reach and so is a title challenge but as the squad gradually gets weeker through lack of investment it is looking like a real possibility within the next couple of years that the great Manchester United may not qualify for the champions league. Scholes, Giggs and Gary Neville don't have many seasons left in them while no real superstar players are coming in, Manchester City, Chelsea and even Tottenham on the other hand have the buying power to further increase the talent in their squads every year. Silva and Van Der Vaart are a couple examples of top class match winning players who have come in to instantly improve their respective teams, United's highest profile buy was Javier Hernandez who has great potential but isn't currently in the same league as the afore mentioned.

Manchester United have been getting by on their name and the tag of being 'the biggest club in the world' for a long time. The club can attract some of the biggest names in football but what good is that if you don't buy any of them?

I'm aware that Manchester United do currently have a strong squad with some very good players, but the key point is that just having a collection of good players is not enough if you want to maintain the high standards that United have set for themselves over the past 20 years.
